View Full Version : My 1JZ Swap.

Well the motor came last Wednesday from JHOT. I started on the wiring yesterday lengthening the harness.... it's looking like a mess, but hopefully when it's done it all extends out and doesn't tangle up. Here are some pictures.... I'm basically opening this thread just for troubleshoot purposes and the pictures that people may be interested in seeing.
1JZ from JHOT still on the crate.

Wiring extension to the harness started.

Soarer fuel pump - does anyone know if this thing is worth putting in?

2JZ-GE engine harness pulled through the firewall, very simple.

Motor is loose, ready to come out.
http://www.myforumfiles.com/albums/userpics/DSC00872.JPG
We had some trouble with a few clips, connectors, etc that were on the lower portion of the engine. We finally got everything out... then we forget the linkage on the transmission. After it was completely loose we tugged forward on the motor hoist a few times and the driveshaft fell out. The motor was out in about 2.5 hours.

On the way out.

Pretty much out. I had to guide it a little so it didn't bang the car up.

Looks like it's time to put something in there.

Done?
Brown Duckz
12-27-2005, 10:56 PM
Done?Well we finished the swap, after some transmission linkage problems the motor fired on the first try, idled decent, sounded great. No abnormal smoke, no odd noises. Since the first drive we haven't been able to build any boost......... at first I thought it may have been because my friend "vented" the factory blow off valve, but we put it back to stock. We thought it could be the intercooler, but it was pressure tested up to 30lbs and it's SEALED. While the intercooler was off we checked for air being forced on the hot side piping, and there is forced air from the turbos. I'm 100% positive it's not the turbos..... they sound healthy, no death wine, no smoke - and they are obviously spinning air. Our boost reading is coming from a port on the intake manifold. Is there anyone who has any idea on this? I need some help troubleshooting here. Could this be a sensor? Possibly the turbo pressure sensor that's present on the intake side? We haven't yet checked each individual pipe/section of the intercooler route, but even if there was a small leak I'd think there would be some boost being built.

i would love to help but im not to familiar with the 1jzgte but i had the same problem with my 2jzgte were the turbos were not building pressure fast. the exhust bypass valve was stuck from carbon/dirt keeping the valve to stay slightly open. i had spoken with someone at titan and thats how i found it.

check your vacume routing for your wasgates..
Brown Duckz
01-03-2006, 09:12 PM
I've bought another set of turbos that should be here this week. I suspect something is wrong with the gates..... I've had multiple people tell me to check for different things dealing with the gates. So this weekend I'll either find an evident problem with the gates or not. The turbos on the car just don't seem to act like blown turbos, no smoke, no wierd noises. I'm betting on a wastegate issue. Thanks guys.

01-04-2006, 09:32 AM
come on now jhot wouldnt sell you a 1j with bad turbos would they?-------Its a bitch with the motor in already to swap out the turbos i woud definatly rule out other things first.
Check for correct voltage at your map sensor.
Actually check your wastgates buy pulling vacume on em and and see if they actuate.Could be a bad vacume line too
And like i said before make sure the vacume routing is correct i have seen allot of mistakes in that area.
Brown Duckz
01-04-2006, 02:16 PM
Well so far the rear turbo is producing airflow, but the front one isn't. I'm unsure how the vac routing is suppose to be, does anyone have a diagram? JHOT is helping with the solution, no worries.

Chris - Since i dont know much about 1jz swaps... how much power do you expect to get from this set up??I'm actually never seen any BPU dyno charts. I'd guess about 300-320rwhp after a full exhaust in the 14-16psi range.

well its easy if you dont have fuel the car runs lean and the car runs like shit. now all cars act different when that happens . on my car i would get on it alittle and it would boost alittle but once i would go full throttle it would bog out or would not boost .car felt like it wanted to go but it wouldn't, really wierd . so just trying to share some info to help out brownducks thought this is what the forums are for. thats why i ask him what fuel pump he is running cause in none of his post does it mention what fuel pump he has and he also mentioned that he can hear the turbos in one post on clublexus so just my 2 cents

Hey this is what the forums are for. If you have poor fuel delivery natrually your car wount rev and could bog under load. But his problem seemed to be no boost, SO how does no boost equal bad fuel pressure ? I understand what your getting at but there is definetly a difference in a bog or no boost no what im sayin.
And buy the way what did you figure out Brown Ducks, Sorry to keep hassling you but it bothers me and im sure it bothers you that you took apart a good running Lexus and cant get your swap running properly. I was hoping for that 1j smile that we all get once were boosting down the road. Hey and remember that free tach mod offer i still wating for you.
Brown Duckz
01-25-2006, 10:43 PM
Me and my friend haven't found the time to swap the turbos. It's def a boost issue... we are getting ZERO pressure. It's either a problem with the gates or the turbos themselves. On the front turbo the wheel doesn't spin at all... you can literally spin it backwards when the motor is under a load. There isn't a boost leak as far as I can tell....... I can't imagine a boost leak that enormous to cause zero pressure, seems as if it would be evident. I have not wired in my boost cut controller yet, but I don't think it's the culprit. Also the tach/temp has been fixed already, thanks anyways.
soarerflame
01-27-2006, 01:38 AM
so did you do the tach gauge and temp gauge fix yourself? if so how hard was the wiring and where did you splice in to both of them? Good luck on finding that no boost issue. You can always go single if its too much of a hassle.

Problem is fixed. The front turbo turbine wheel was shredded and there was all kinds of shaft play. I swapped on a mint set of turbos [from Matt_One_Dime] and the thing is boosting great now. I'm running open downpipe so the car is quickly hitting 14-15psi and fuel cutting. Thank god the problem is solved. It's now time to start modding. :hitit:

Sooo are you going to give in now that you realize that when you buy a cheap 1j there could be somthing wrong with it? Dont get me wrong as those turbos are an accident wating to happen but you would think one would notice that upon inspection. Im glad you scored but you have to admit you ended up spending more than you thought Huh

Cool, that was nice what did they give you as im curious on what they value the turbos at as they dont seem to value the 1j sets that much. Also you have to think what the motor may have went through to shred a turbo. Please dont take this the wrong way as im just looking for info and not putting you or your engine set down.

The motor set I bought was suppose to be an 80k mile set. The wastegates on these turbos are kamikazi as it is. My thoughts are is that the front gate stuck open or something and overboosted the turbo to hell and back.
