View Full Version : LSD (a must for NA-T?)

For those with LSDs, driving through corners or fast turns aside. Does it really make that much of a difference in straightline acceleration?
I dont have one personally, but I've been in many different cars and owned quite a few myself...
having an LSD is CRUCIAL at power levels above 350whp IMO... below that its "manageable" but you'll still have serious traction problems
If you spin through 2nd gear (not from a quick shift, i'm talking from laying on the throttle in the middle of 2nd and you go crazy sideways) you're making a bit too much power for your current tires to handle :) This is the case of NA-T with the stock diff

Thanks a lot for the info bro,
Your description match what I am experiencing right now. If I step on it while cruising at 30~40mph in 2nd gear, I break the rear tires loose almost as soon as I hit 1bar of boost, this is while crusing, it never did this before at old boost level of .5bar.

I am currently on Toyo T1-S 255/40/17. So wider/more sticker tires are more crucial than LSD?
How do you magange to get by without LSD?, if I remember correctly you are making insane hp(500~600rwh on your NA-T.
Nope, I never made that much power on my NA-T... its currently STOCK again right now and I'm trying to figure out how I will get back to NA-T... lots of options and things to mull over
I was prolly making 350whp at the most on my setup, i had a log manifold and a crappy intercooler setup with 2" piping.
The only way to get around not having an LSD is to get wider and/or stickier tires
but let's be realistic here shall we? :)
an Auto TT Supra diff is around $400 for the entire assembly which will BOLT INTO your car with no modifications other than swapping the driveshaft connection flanges on the diff itself (one big nut holds it on)
275/35R18 tires like a set of BFG KDs will run you around $200 a piece... thats the same price
you say you've got 255s... that should be enough to hold the power you're making if you've got an LSD...
Dont get me wrong though, you will still have traction problems with 255s... but you'll have less traction problems with LSD on those tires vs running 275s (if you can even FIT them)
best combo would be 275s and LSD... then you'd hook like a mofo ;)

I would buy the auto tt diff immediately if it is only $400. Don't they go for much more than $400? I thought they are in very high demand and fairly rare.

Yea the Torsen's are hard to come by I have heard, but TRD has a more expensive alternative or something, not sure someone correct me if I am wrong

my trd was 800.00 and 10 weeks on some slow boat from japan. and that was with knowing a big wig at trd

How much wear would an LSD do on the W58? I was told that it can cause excessive wear and be a determining factor in the W58s already "short" life?

missing a shift will wear it more

$800 is not too bad, but the car should of came with one. Why some 5spds have lsd and other don't?
Did you ever ran your NA-T set up without lsd? I would imagine with your 300rwtq at only 3500rpm would make you spin the rear tires quite a bit without lsd.

I just finished installin my TT auto rear w/ lsd. I'm just waiting on some new upper control arms that i ordered, should be here tomorrow to finish it up. My 5spd diff. was without lsd, so i'll report any differences.

I was given a choice from my tuner to either wait as long as you did for the trd, or wait about 2 weeks for the kaaz lsd. From what I hear there both identical and actually maybe 50$ cheaper then TRD.
Yea Jay I wanna see how the cruising speeds is. I hate cruising at like 35-4000rpm. It seems high as hell to be cruising. The GS400 is only doing like 2500rom at 70-80mph.
Also, please tell me what you plan to do about the speedo diff and what it actually is. I hear about this "yellowbox" that fixes it. For $100 it's not too bad.
The cruising speed rpm should go down vs stock... drastically I'd imagine. Our cars already have a pretty short stock diff (a 4.10 iirc) vs the 3.7 in the auto TT LSD

well, everything is done and buttoned up. but its thunderstorming over here, so no test drive today. on a positive note, new upper control arms = no more squeaks!!!

Jay,
I am looking forward to yoru review, hope you get some nice weather soon.

Only specific Non-turbo Supras did. The SC and GS never did.
You can tell by looking at the VIN number... I think its a "A" in the number as denoting it having the LSD, not positive tho... info is on SF

Lexforlife--Are cruising RPM's lower than before the swap and can you tell a difference in acceleration?
Eventually traction becomes a suspension problem, I suspect lex4life has hit that point :D

look in the door there is a 4 letter code that describes the rear diff in that perticular car.... A01A LSD and A01B open diff.
don't quote me on the code....but i know if it ends in A it LSD
or jack the rear of the car up and turn one wheel, if the other one turns the oposite , then no LSD for you! :(

you have your info back to front.
A series is open, B series is LSD.
There are a few different stock LSD's

I believe on the USDM NA, there was only one type of LSD unless it changed when the 97/98s came out; I'm quite certain it stayed the same.
