TSRM shows everything you have to do

Basically you remove the exhaust manifold and intake manifold (usually just the upper part is fine) and disconnect the fuel lines and rail, etc

remove the camshafts (which require a certain method without breaking them) and the timing belt and the distributor

unbolt the head in the correct order (again something that has to be specific to keep the head from warping). Get gasket crap off the head and block surface. Replace with the ARP headstuds and the BL headgasket. Torque the head back down in the correct order and by correct method (in stages). And bolt everything back on. Not much more involved than that.

Reset the timing with a new timing belt and get the distributor lined up. Might as well replace the spark plugs at that point too.

correction. Michael is right, it is the 2mm...i was lookin at the BL site at the time. Is it really necessary to remove the distributor and the cams?

toyota service and repair manual maybe?

Bingo!

And to the above post:

If you're worried about removing the distributor, then dont bother trying to remove the head; because thats WAY WAY more complicated. Setting up the distributor is a piece of cake compared to pulling a head off of a motor while in the car :)

You dont have to remove the cams I dont think, but it is hella hard to get to the headbolts if you dont. You have to change the timing belt anyways (might as well while pulling the head right?)

you have to pull off the cams to get to the head bolts.

It will help to have an extra set of hands around to help lift the head off. I remember fighting with it by myself just lifting it off and trying to set it back down again softly. Or use a cherry picker...

I have the pages scanned and on my website...but the http isnt workin right now.

send me your email and ill send you a .zip file with all the pages for removal / install. It's almost 20mb though

I have done my HG in 5 hours workin at it straight and having the manuals handy for torque specs, etc. I have done a lot of HG jobs, the 2jzge head is not really hard at all. Very involved with the intake and the million vaccum lines, but overall not that bad.

Hint....Go grab a 10MM allen key....a big one. Cut off the handle and make it about 3-4" long. Use a 10MM 3/8 or 1/2 drive socket and a large breaker bar to get those stock head bolts off. Don't take 1 bolt all the way out at once, turn it about 90degrees, then head to the next one. Pay attention to the order in which the head bolts go on and off.

on the subject of headgaskets, does anyone make anything more than a 2.5?

SP makes a 3MM i think...but why would you want larger?

A TT HG on a GE setup gets you around 1.4MM. Really anything larger than 2.0mm is going to take away torque in the end. A TT HG and a good tune is just fine for a NA-T application and you can still boost as much as your 5spd will allow ;)

excuse my stupidity but what compression does the 2.5 net you on a na-t swap?
