Hey guys. I just want to let all you guys and girls know, if you want to go na-t and keep the factory head gasket, please follow everyones advise and dont go over 7psi.
I ran about 6psi for about a month untill i got used to the speed and had to have more. Soo... i turned the boost up alittle bit... and a little more untill i am running right at 13psi and let me tell you, 13 psi with 10:1 compression felt faster than my frends auto 98 TT at 19psi on bpu stock twins. We never raced so I dont know if it was faster or not. All i really had for fuel tuning was a sc400 maf, denso 550cc injectors, apexi safcII, and a seat of the pants dyno tune.
I don't think it was just over boost with the factory HG because the only damage to the engine was piston#5, it was alittle on the white side and a few small peices of it did want to be there any more.
Any way I have another motor on the way and also have an innovate LM-1 wide band (to fine tune the air fuel), a profec b specII boost controler, a greedy 2mm HG and arp head studs

That sucks man, hopefully the next engine will work better for you.

What size turbo? A seat of the pants dyno tune will get you no-where, it's like taking an accounting test without knowing the equation. Make sure to put that wideband to good use on the next setup.

how true this is, thanks for the pic.

trust me i know the feeling man. those #5 and 6 cylinders are infamous, those are the ones i melted ... 5 was much worse than 6. well good luck with the new motor

Do 5 and 6 just run hotter or did you maybe have an injector issue? I think with the right tunning it can be done

The right tuning? yeah it can definitely be done...
but not on stock ECU for very long...

right tuning involves an AEM or something else major so that ignition timing can be changed...

Its most likely ignition timing that killed this motor at 13psi :)

Our 96 has been together almost 3 years with the stock HG and never under 10 psi and up to 14.5 psi. no problems yet :werd: But I have run a wide band since day one :naughty: and at the track with the boost up it gets 105 octane...car must have 100-150 passes at the track.
I think the issue on your car was AFR and timing, not boost-v-compression.
How many miles did you drive in that untuned time frame?
BTW that seat of the pants dyno...they always feel fastest right before BOOM!
