View Full Version : Basic Turbo Kit running on an Untuned Stock ECU?

So I just VERY recently posted about how I'm installing my turbo kit. Now...let me explain my situation to why I have come across contemplating doing this. So, I have the E-manage that I bought. I would prefer not to even bother with it since I would be changing it out very, very soon. However, I need to free up space that my turbo kit is hogging and want to get it on the car. I would be running the DaveH upgraded kit, but I wouldn't be installing the headgasket, injectors, or fuel pump yet. I'm also running off the wastegate to control boost for now. So, I'll be running stock fuel, on a PT52 on minimal boost (5psi). I was talking to someone and they had mentioned one of their friends had done the same thing I was doing, but instead of doing an E-manage, they had no fuel controller. They ran their basic kit on the stock, untuned ECU. My question is this, could I do this as well? But keep in mind, this is what I want. I only would need to get my car from my friend's house where we are working on it, to my campus to the lot I park in. During this very short drive (read: less than 5 miles) I would keep it under 3,500RPM. I'm asking if I could keep it like this for maybe a max of a couple weeks while I waited for my AFC? I'm just saying, I'm in no way going around doing WOT pulls every gear, but if I did accidentaly start to create boost, I wouldn't instantly blow my motor or something would I? Sorry for being so long, any help appreciated.

Well, if you dont boost you wouldnt really hurt anything. But i wouldnt drive the car like that if it isnt tuned.

It will be fine... just a little lean, the more you stay out of boost the safer everything will be.

Would be better probably if you could just get an AFC anyways.

However, you should be fine. I dont see it being too big of a problem anyways...

Do you plan on running an aftermarket fuel pump?

i wouldnt try it. if your going to do it, do it right. you dont want to take any chances bcz one time is all it takes to break something. if your diing to get it in, install the e-manage and swap out what your going to change when you get your new stuff. that way there is no question. it might be a little more work but it's better than pushing it!

Ok...a few things. It's not like I plan on driving the car like this forever. I just want to know if I can drive it like that (when I say drive, I mean maybe 10 miles the entire 2 weeks...I'm on a college campus, it mainly just sits) for a couple weeks while I wait on my AFC. The E-manage isn't as easy as you think it is to install. It would be a hassle to put it in for a week and a half and then have to take it back out.

As for the pump, I do have the Walbro 255lph pump, but I have no plans to install it yet. I will when I get the Lexus MAF and I can install the injectors too.

i had the afc with it taking out fuel (old stock setup), ran it like that for a couple days after i got the turbo on (some wot pulls) at 3 psi (some damn problems) and it was ok. Went to get it tuned and they said I was running very lean and settings for only 3 psi of boost were riched out to almost 30% in some cases...So i say try not to get it into boost range

don't turbo it till you get the afc! Are you getting the SAFC2? If your gonna be making no boost thats fine. you can have all that stuff hooked up and then not connect the turbine compressor to the intake. Run the intake on the stock and go home with it like that. When the SAFC arrives connect all the intercooler piping and be come a boostaphile.

There is no problem running a very low amount of boost untuned, there won't be any horrific problems, I just wouldn't WOT very much.

Well it looks like problem solved. I found a buyer for my E-manage, and I found a seller of a black SAFCII...looks like hopefully I'll have all of it done in about 3-4 weeks. Wish me luck...I definitely need it.

Are you telling him to vent the turbo compressed discharge directly to atmosphere?

Umm.. you don't want to do that. If the turbo has no resistance, it will spin up uncontrolled instantly to it's limits and possibly seriously damage the turbo. The wastegate would never open, as there would be no positive boost being generated to overcome the spring pressure. Imagine the turbo going from zero to 130,000 rpm within a second or two...

Im actually thinking of driving my NA-T down to a shop about an hour and a half away from here to get the AFC or AFR installed.

Will this be ok driving down the freeway at 4,000RPM?

as long as you dont boost i'd imagine you'd be fine.

Hey out of curiosity how did the emanage work for you?
