View Full Version : misfire at high boost - possible fuel cut?

Here is my setup:

2mm HG
61mm turbo
MAP-ECU with 860cc injectors
MSD 6AL
MSD boost ignition retard set to retard 1 degree for every psi starting at 5,000 RPM
new wires, cap, rotor, plugs
Plugs are NGK iridium with .25 gap

If I keep my boost low and RPMS's low I have no problem, like 8psi and below 6,000 RPM

As soon as I go above 6,000 RPM with 8psi set for boost, I get MAJOR breakup, and then I spike to 20psi instantly and black smoke POORS out the exhaust.

Or, if I have my boost set to say 15psi, and I get to 5,000RPM then I will start breaking up by 5,000 RPM and spikes to 22-25psi. Of course I get NO power from this.

I also tried retarding my base timing and turn off the MSD timing controller, and I would start breaking up as soon as I hit boost.

Has anybody ever experienced fuel cut before as I wonder if this could be the problem, or somehow my timing is getting retarded too much.

Well at first I'd say it was your timing being too retarded. Retarded timing and rich fuel will spool the turbo QUICK and would also cause the black smoke from the resulting misfires.
Have you tried removing the MSD controller completely?

That is exactly what is happening. The MSD boost retard is DOA!!!! Basically getting antilag that won't turn off. I am keeping the MSD 6AL, but I have not gone AEM so I don't need the MSD boost retard.

I have no doubt that it would work if I got a box that wasn't broken. My tach adapter is broken too. That is 2 out of 3 devices I have purchased from MSD that were DOA, not good for them.
