View Full Version : So i was reading the supercharger thread and got a crazy idea (miller cycle)

Would it be possible to take a screw type SC, mount it to the 2jz, and then using adjustable cam gears, or maybe camshafts...(i'm new to piston engines) keep the intake side open for 20% longer just liek on the millenia S?

or is there more to it than that.

problem is getting the screw type supercharger

and its A LOT more complicated than that... keeping the intake side open 20% longer will just cause blow-through and you'll make less power than if you just left it well enough alone.

The stock cams are done quite well honestly. If you want to upgrade the intake cam, just use an intake cam made for the SupraTT... like an HKS 264 or something. Cant do the exhaust cam until you get rid of the distributor.

well the thing is the supercharger allows you to keep the intake side open longer.

I didnt know if you knew that or not. like the whole miller cycle engine thing.

I was just pondering this anyways.

allows you to keep open the intake side longer? i dont understand how that works

what happens when the intake side stays open so long that it overlaps with the exhaust side too? (20% would EASILY do it) the pressurized air blows right through the cylinder and right out the exhaust... If you shorten the exhaust side time of opening to compensate, then you choke the exhaust side of the head.

this isnt some crazy idea either... this is a real problem... you're speaking of valve overlap like its not a problem. Valve Lift has a much more pronounced effect in turbocharged cars because it doesnt have major negative effects like that (of course hi-lift camshafts cause the motor to become interference and requires some major valvetrain upgrades)

Maybe its not 20% longer exactly, but here's a description.

Why would you even think about a Supercharger when they are on average 20-30% less efficient than a turbo?

my sentiments exactly...

the only reason a supercharger should ever be considered over a turbo is packaging or cost concerns... and even then, MOST applications this will not apply to, even big displacement V8s... there's almost always room to mount a single turbo somewhere :)

I dont get why ppl get this idea.
What does the 2jz motor have a problem with boost?
Do you want parasitic losses?

Turbo is best.

the design is not for performance, more or less to reduce fuel consumption, which it doesnt do that very well. it takes power from the motor to drive the blowers to keep the magical power increase. for a measly 20% increase in power the cost to be able to produce this would be sky high for a 2jz. making the cam stay open for 30 degrees overlap then close for the short period that it would be would make the cam have to have stall points then speed up to catch up with the cycle. dont get me wrong the oscolations that the motor would make im sure would sound sweet but its just not feasable

TSoprano that's a very rare pic you got there. I have never seen an actual pic of the S/C that Turboeast used to sale.
