Well I finally found some free time to install my xspower turbo kit. It took me a little bit longer than I expected, but it's finally finished...for now.

On with the pictures:

^Here's a picture with everything ripped out. I sprayed some PB blaster on the header and exhaust bolts the night before, and everything loosened right up.

^Here I am fitting the intercooler into place.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x236/bam13004/Turbo5.jpg
^I couldn't wait to put the t61 in to see what it looked like. What a beast!!!

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x236/bam13004/Turbo15.jpg
^Here's my oil drain hole. This was my biggest worry during the whole install. I took the holesaw and grease approach and it worked out swimmingly. I used a 7/8" holesaw and a 6mm tap on the sides. I just used a sandwich plate for the feed. I figured that was the easiest. Plus, it gives me the ease of adding an oil pressure line later on without further trouble.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x236/bam13004/Turbo18.jpg
^Here is my original set up. After a few rides around the block and compressor surge I moved my BOV to the hot side. I've also heated up the spring to decrease the pressure slightly. I'd also recommend getting a straight fitting for the top of the BOV and using some sturdy 3/8" hose. I T'd off the vacuum line between the manifold and the power steering pump. That helped with the compressor surge quite a bit.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x236/bam13004/Turbo19.jpg
^Here is the finished project...kinda. I'm about to go wrap the TB inlet pipe here in about 5 minutes. I still have a list of other goodies needed, but the base turbo is in and boosting. Now I just need to find a clutch that can handle it.

^I ended up not having as much wrap left as I thought. Oh well. It at least will protect the coupler for now. You can see where I tapped into the power steering vacuum here. I'm not a big fan of the bright orange hose, but it was the best lowes had. You can also see the sandwich plate on the oil filer with the feed line coming from it.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x236/bam13004/Finish2.jpg
^Here is where my BOV ended up. It made it pretty easy to get at for the spring heating too. I know it looks pretty close here in the picture, but there is plenty of room right there. You can also see the honda overflow tank that Mark recommended. It fits in front of the batter pretty snug. I just need to find a way to put a battery tie down on.

nice man... good to see a clean install like this! what other mods u have and what PSI u running? lets see some videos!!! ;-)

thanks for the compliment. since my clutch is on it's way out i'm not pushing much right now at all. i'm only running it up to about 3psi, and ever so gently. pretty sad to have all this, and not be able to use it. i don't have many other mods. i'm managing fuel with safc and boost pressure with tru boost. i have some mkiii 440 injectors and a 255lph pump waiting to drop in. other than that i'm just saving for a strong clutch right now.

yea make sure u dont forget the headgasket or atleast water meth instead. otherwise the injectors and the fuel pump will be useless if u dont lower the compression!

Very clean install! And nice writeup as well, thanks for posting. Keep your boost to 10psi if you are on 93 octane, if you want to go more, like vellela said, add water injection or lower the CR with an NA-T HG set.

Thanks Mark. I plan on keeping it around 6-8 psi. The engine has 105k on it right now. It's no spring chicken. I still need to put a clutch in before I can hold any torque at all anyway. I'm also a little worried about pushing the W58 too hard since it's my daily driver.

Gotta say again, that is a FINE looking install! I'm betting you're going to see every nickle back on that and then some in resale value someday.

the w58 is strong man. im at 18psi on mine with no worries. so until ur looking in the 20's for PSI it should be good! i have 160K miles on my car and im at 18psi without really much to worry about! so turn that up and have ur fun!

that's some awesome news velella. i guess most of the people having issues with their w58s are the ones beating the crap out of them at the strip. i drive pretty conservative on my tranny.

Yep, most likely, luckily they are a dime a dozen and a very easy to drop and swap.

i'm more worried about the down time of it going than anything. i was actually thinking about doing the r154 swap or possibly that bell housing for the american transmissions. I just don't have that much money to drop on those projects right now.

then just go easy on it for a while, save up and get everything in the garage. Then you can beat on the W58 and do the swap.... so take it easy for now.

If i were you i would not run the ngk 3330,they crack my coil on top my 2jzget motor.Reason,i think the ngk 3330 top a little big.:dunno:

no, the GTE coil packs crack because toyota used crappy injeciton molding, hate to dis toyota on this, but it's true. The coil packs on the GTE motors never last long, the only way to keep them going is to NEVER get them WET or OILY, EVER.

I dont post here alot primarily on SF but this is a great site for general info. I'm currently in more or less the same boat with a NA MKIV. I opted for the JDM 2J with the Soarer R154. The short and the skinny of it is I contemplated the same configuration (NA-T) for a split second but then decided against it. I still had to drill the oil pan out as I used my NA onces. Something for you to think about...

Here is another reminder to remove or lower the oil pan after drilling that oil return hole for cleansing. This is after a 1 full engine oil flush (6 quarts) and 4 quarts of oil through the oil return hole:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b188/dejacky/OilPanDebree1.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b188/dejacky/OilPanDebree2.jpg

And "yes" I was extremely cautious while drilling.. I used vast amounts of white Lithium grease, while constantly cleaning the drill and re-greasing. METAL SHAVINGS STILL GET IN! :eek2:

Hope everything works out.

I'm still using my distributor, so the coil packs aren't an issue for me at the time being. Although it'd be nice to look more GTE than GE-T, I don't plan on worrying about the coil packs until much further down the road.

The point of my post was to point out the flaw drilling out the NA pan while its still mounted on the car.

I've had about 80% of customers drill the upper pan with the lower pan still on, the other 20% pull the pan. No one has reported problems with the chips and I think this is for two reasons. One, the baffle above the pickup prevents oil from getting into the rotating parts and two the chips are aluminum so they any that may get thru the mesh are small and go thru the pump and into the filter. For the most part, I think the flow thru that screen is very slow considering the size of the screen vs the flow rate and I don't see it vacuuming up the small stuff. The big stuff just sits, and does nothing. Regardless, there are many cars out there running this way with no issues.

Unless you completely pull the upper pan there will be shavings that sit in the lower pan. But, just like Mark said, they either wont get sucked up and just sit at the bottom or they will get filter via the oil filter. There is no need to worry.

my brother in law just turboed hit dodgey old diesel hilux, he said he ran compressed air in though the sump while drilling and it blew (most) of the crap out while he was doing it.

I use a hole saw and lots of lithium grease and it grabs all of it well.

bmantis
02-22-2008, 11:35 PM
I did the hole saw and grease as well. I pulled it out about 15 times as I went to clean off shavings and regrease. Then I flushed through my previously drained oil to help wash out what the grease didn't catch.

This is exactly what I have in mind for my 94 NA/T conversion. Yours has the look of a well thought out install, but not above the capabilities of your average mechanical enthusiast (i.e., myself). The main thing is the engine management for me, and I suspect I'll run an Apexi Neo. But again, I really like the look of this install.

I have a 97 as well. I was wondering what MAF that is? I never had the origial MAF for my car, but I had bought one to use, and it looks just like that one. I thought mine was a TT one though because my car runs SOOOO rich. Is that a TT MAF or the ones that came in 97-98's originally? I know the 97's and 98's ones are hotwire, but never seen what they look like since mine was gone when I got my car.

Also, how is it doing in blowthrough?

bmantis
03-19-2009, 07:59 AM
That is the original 97 MAF. It works very well in blowthrough. I also have a lexus V8 MAF that is slightly larger, but I'm waiting on new couplings to come in to hook it up. If you need a 97 MAF I'll be taking mine off my car relatively soon.
