How often do you or should you clean the cone style air filters?

I have never cleaned my air filter since NA-T, it has been over a year, 10k+ miles. I am going to take it off and wash it soon.

But I have Apexi Power Intake, it is dry type of air filter, suppose to be maintenance free, is it ok to wash it? I purchased the K&N air filter cleaning kit today. I will probably just use the cleaning solution and skip the re-oil part.

K&N says every 75,000 miles, but I would do it at least twice a year. I've also heard that the filters actually take in less air right after they are cleaned & oiled.

Sorry, it was a typo  It is actually 10k+ miles not 10+.

I just cleaned the air filter, I used the K&N cleaner, and let it soak of 10 minutes then rinse off. When I rinsed off the filter the water was completely black, it filled the bucket with 2 gallons of what look like motor oil that has not been changed for 10k miles. Pure black.
