i was in the junk yard today looking for r154 trannies out of a mk3 supra when i found a sc300 with a w58 tranny in it. the guy said he wanted 550 for it. question is should i buy that w58 tranny or should i just get the r154 mk3 tranny. i heard the r154 tranny is stronger. thanx

get a r154 if you can source one. you will be disappointed with the w58 if you plan on some HP

How much power can a w58 handle? Im planning on a 2jzgte aristo swap, and mods will be usdm turbos, fmic, 3" exhaust all the way, walbro pump, and up the boost a couple psi. Would the w58 be able to handle that much power?

I'd say 300rwhp or so (BPU TT power). Of course people will disagree and pull up secondhand information from forum posts about someone who has run 8 million horsepower through a W58, but the fact is that it will break eventually.

Alright thanks for the reply. I knew it wouldnt be able to handle a certain amount of power without taking a crap eventually, but i wasnt sure how much power.

300 is conservative for the w58. I'd give it 400 :D

Yeah mate you are right, I'm quite conservative with these things.. I just hate it when things break and I get stuck with no car hehe.

I would totally go W58!! R154's are alright trannys but having to change the thrust washer every 50 miles sucks. Besides they make a dog box for the w58 and it's only 1500 bucks. Now I know they're out there for a 154 but try paying just 1500 bucks for it. R154 for the fail. DrNick everything breaks eventually whether it be a w58 or a condom it all breaks eventually lol. Lastly all this hype about r154's being way stronger is false as they are barely rated over a w58 and what's a rating. How many of us have had lets say a pontiac and that sob broke down all the time so now we hate pontiacs right, well how about our neighbor with the same pontiac who has driven it religously for 9 million miles without a problem he loves pontiacs. Catch my drift....

I've broken TWO W58s now with 403whp in my SC. The 2nd was after a fresh rebuild with new sychros, etc...less than 2000 miles on the rebuilt unit. I don't really bang on it either. The W58 was never built to handle the power of a GTE engine, especially when at BPU levels. The R154 is beefier with a better track record. Lots of us Florida guys run the r154s.
