Started noticing this "cricket" sounding noise a couple of days ago...checked all the fluids and only the power steering fluid was a little low, but that would make a whining noise anyway. Serpentine belt was replaced about 2 months ago. Other than this noise, car is rock solid with no other issues.

The noise gets faster with the engine, but doens't match the rpm's. A/C on or off doesn't affect the noise, neither does the clutch being in or out.

Well my first guess is throw out bearing but with the noise not being affected with the clutch being in or out, that just ruled that out. possibly one of your accesory bearings, but its hard to tell without hearing it in person.
Also if the power steering was a little low, you might have burned out the bearing by starving it of fluid.

Check the fluid again after about 2 days and see if its lower you might have a leak in your system.

I sprayed the serpentine belt with belt conditioner and it got worse...eventually quieting back down to the same noise. I'm gonna top off the power steering fluid and see if that's the issue. Seems as if something is causing the belt to slip just a little causing the squeal. I guess it is possible that the belt was defective and gave up the ghost early.

Took the belt off and cleaned the pulleys with carb cleaner (the wife and I both scrubbed the hell out of them). Put on a new belt and the problem was solved. I had used belt conditioner on the old belt that I ended up replacing with this one and apparently the left over dressing messed this one up. My mechanic said to NEVER use belt conditioner on a ribbed belt. That stuff is like glue.

Yeah, I tried cleaning the pulleys real good and also cleaning the old belt, but it still made the noise. I wanted to save the $36, but was not able to....
